The Cage

Staring out through the bars
Into a world of light, of laughter
That I have never known,
That I will never know,
I shiver,
I huddle,
Alone.

Secluded, I hear a new voice,
Colours of the sound painting pictures
Of a world of joy, of freedom.
I spread my wings within the confines
From which I never have flown.
Dangled before me, I see the key
Which I never alone could find.
The key that lies beyond my own,
Small reach.

The taste of freedom, the smell of it,
Within my reach. I spread my wings,
Ready to fly.
And then...

The key withdraws.
The light goes out.
It is time to sleep, once more,
Alone.
I learn to love my bars now,
While they may confine, they also can protect.
Keep away the lies, the tears,
The Pain.
Keep me away from the tastes of things
I never will konw.
Within, I sing.
The cover comes down, throwing my space
Into cold, dark night.
