Threnody

in memory of Dr. Douglas DeMars, who passed away recently. He will be missed.

Tears of the angels drift to earth
Frozen in time and space,
Crystallized fleetingly, fragile shapes caught for a moment.
Their moment is gone.
Your moment is gone.

Moonlight sparkles and dances along the snow-strewn fields,
Like diamonds, scattered before the gods and man alike,
None the less precious for not being gems,
Each flake a gift to those who care to receive.
Your gift, however, is now gone,
Melted away from the warm touch of our fingertips,
Thawed away from our mortal breaths.

As our vital air, exhaled, spirals out from us
Cloudlike and nebulous, hanging a moment before it is gone-
So your final breath hung,
Frozen in time
In that last fatal moment
As your soul fled,
Darkening our world.

You taught us to open our hearts, our souls.
To use words as a weapon, as a balm.
Fleeting words spiral down from our being, onto paper
To be held for eternity.
So I hold you here, suspended for eternity.
You taught us life.
Live on, forever.
